2022 was a much busier year of photographing weddings than I expected, but in the sweetest way. I had SO many wonderful couples to work with, and we saw snow, rain, and extreme heat. 9 of the 12 months held weddings, and each one was full of kind souls that made the long days and sometimes overnight travel worth it.

This wedding day… one of the best couples, and just the most kind humans. I’m so excited to share a few highlights from Maddi and Ryan’s wedding at Rustic Rose Barn, just north of Des Moines in central Iowa!
A country church wedding, drinks at your favorite bar, and dancing in the rain with your best friends… what else could you ask for!? This intimate summer Minnesota wedding day is on the blog!!
this is something new for me- engagement photos at the state fairgrounds! I LOVE the Iowa State Fair, and the trees are historic and colorful in the fall. I think they’re the perfect backdrop for a magical engagement session!!
Once you’ve picked a wedding venue and date, the next thing couples usually do is chose a wedding photographer! Often, a great question to ask your photographer is if they include an engagement session… read more to find out why!
Oops… I’ve been working on blogging these wedding photos for a week now! Worth the wait, they sure are. Kirsten & Mike married outdoors on a cool, rainy Saturday in the woods of Michigan. These two met at Au Sable Institute, where they interned during a summer and fell in love with the land & each other. Mike proposed to Kirsten on a bench there just last summer, and they finally married on their dream wedding date (8.8.2020!) despite a pandemic and surprise rainstorms.
Megan and Evan’s wedding day remained a gorgeous celebration of love, despite the months of hectic re-planning due to Coronavirus. They kept their original date, and chose to marry outdoors in the gorgeous space of Rock Creek State Park in central Iowa— with just immediate family and a couple close friends to witness their nuptials. Photographing friends happens quite often in my line of work. Anyone out there surprised at all? Nah? Me either! But it was a bit of a surprise when these two asked me to photograph their fall wedding! I’ve known Brian since childhood in Cedar Falls, and we’ve become better friends since he decided to attend Iowa State University four years ago. Rebekah’s older sister is a friend of mine, so when these two started dating it felt like worlds colliding!
You won’t find many people planning a snowy destination wedding. All the magazine covers showcase mountains covered with wildflowers, or beaches on exotic islands. And even though I consider myself a part-time destination wedding photographer (hello, Colorado weddings!) the majority of my couples live and marry in the Midwest. Not surprisingly, I primarily photograph weddings in Iowa, Nebraska, and Minnesota. All of which come with a LONG HARD WINTER each year!
Don’t get me wrong. I love snow! It’s gorgeous and reminds of me of ski vacations in the Rocky Mountains. And Christmas & my birthday (shoutout at December). And mulled wine, and sweaters, and silent wintery nights. But when you live in the Midwest, and winter can be anywhere from 3-6 months long, that means a good chunk of couples choose to tie the knot… come hell or high snow drifts. ;)
Wow. What do I say!? Lizzy, as I know her, roomed with me, in my first Ames apartment. She was a junior at ISU, and not long after moving in, this guy Nate started hanging around. He was kind of quiet at first (especially compared to her!) but slowly started sharing more of himself as we all crossed paths. Us girls figured out by the end of the year that we though he was the one for her… and we were right. ;)
