Des Moines continually pops up in the news, internet, and even pop culture as one of the hottest cities to live in! (Not literally, although this summer was a steamy one.) It's one of the best locations for insurance companies to plant, popular with music & food junkies during summer concerts and festivals, and, of course... during caucus season! Although I just moved to Des Moines this past year, I've been visiting this city since I moved to Iowa in 1998. Living here only grows my admiration more for the best of the midwest city.

Something for everyone exists in Des Moines, as it continues to expand. You can find endless cafes, restaurants that range from strange to high class, shops full of items either vintage or artisan-created. Whether you're in Des Moines for a vacation, looking for stay-cation ideas, or just something to do on a random afternoon in the city, here are some of my suggestions!

1. Better Homes & Garden's Test Garden (Fridays, noon to 2pm from May until October)
