Winter may have reclaimed its original place in my heart as favorite season these last few years. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE summer (especially midwest summers, with long days and lots of activities) - but there’s something special about cozy winter evenings. Des Moines always hosts a variety of events during the holiday season, and there’s much to enjoy if you want to bundle up and head out for an afternoon or evening in the city.
Holiday Markets! The best known option is Jingle in the Junction. Settled in historic West Des Moines, you can wander the quant streets with hot drink in hand. You may find some free snacks and goodies inside cozy establishments, and holiday gift ideas will be plentiful. Pop over from 5-8pm each Thursday evening, starting Nov 21 up until Christmas. A few of my favorites shops are Hinge on 5th and
Ice Skating at Brenton. Nothing feels more iconic at the holidays than bundling up in way too many layers, and ice skating in a small oval while Christmas music blasts from the heavens. ;) Brenton Skating Plaza boasts a great view of the DSM skyline, and it’s within walking distance to a host of great spots for hot food and beverages (adult or otherwise) in the East Village. There’s plentiful street parking nearby, so pack your mittens and head over. Brenton opens up on November 22 this year!
Enjoying cafes. This is for my introverted bookworms! A plethora of cozy cafes (or restaurants with coffee & hot drinks) exist in the Des Moines metro. A few of my favorites to read at include: Hobnob, St Kilda on SW 5th, Kava, and West End Salvage.
Christkindlmarket Des Moines. Growing up in Europe, I have distant (yet fond) memories of outdoor Holiday Markets. It’s been a JOY to have our own expanding Christkindlmarket Des Moines, I’ve gone every open year since 2017! Entrance is free (although you may have to fight for parking) and you can enjoy shopping at the vendor stalls, or warm up with Glühwein or a beer while enjoying live entertainment!
Winter Farmer’s Market: the lesser known sister of the DSM Downtown Farmer’s Market, you can still shop for seasonal produce, tasty treats and a host of crafted items. More details are here, but mark your calendars for Nov 22-24!
Catch a show at the Civic Center. Winter is the perfect time to dress up- whether that’s to see the Nutcracker (a tradition, truly), the Symphony, or a musical visiting from Broadway!
