Des Moines is not the most diverse Midwest city, but that just means the variety of backgrounds who have landed in the heartland are even more proud of their heritage. About 14% of the DSM metro claims Asian ethic background! I love CelebrAsian, a weekend at the end of AAPI month showcasing authentic food, cultural exhibits, live entertainment, and family-friendly activities. It grows every year, and this year 80k guests are expected!!
I’ve wanted to take my camera to CelebrAsian for YEARS. So often, I have a wedding (brides love long holiday weekends) and since this festival only runs Fri/Sat, it can be difficult for me to get here more than a short time. This year, I’m going BOTH days and took my camera on Friday. :) It was the perfect festival weather, a warm but cool evening, with plenty of activities and eats. Highlights for me were definitely watching guys playing Sepak Takraw (foot volleyball), the Lion Dance crew, and randomly running into so many people I know! I loved the Dj at the enf of the night, I was literally dancing in the street as I left. SUCH a vibe, and truly the best celebration of all our Asian communities across DSM and Iowa!
