I have photographed many seniors in the last 10 years of running a photography business. Between senior and wedding photography, it’s hard to find a corner of the Des Moines metro I haven’t explored! Getting to encourage you to choose a unique session location and vibe for your senior photo session is important to me, and I’m here to help! I’ve got a list of spots NOT on the blog, but reach out if you’d like to book a senior session.
My style as a senior photographer is natural, colorful, and modern. Your photos will reflect the lighting, season, and your personal aesthetics! I’ll always help you choose locations that fit your vision and vibe, and create a comfortable and fun environment for you. Curious about some locations? Let’s get into it!
Des Moines Rose Garden
This location is no secret among my friends, but so many clients have never been here! Nestled behind the DSM Art Center, this garden boasts seasonal florals and a quiet lovely park that feels just a little bit enchanted. Perfect if you want a fairytale, floral vibe!
2. Jester Park
Technically not in Des Moines, but just west of the city, this park has a variety of lovely green spaces - including a pond! It’s beautiful any time of year, but especially busy on weekends… so weeknights are golden here.
3. Downtown Des Moines
You can find so many fun spots downtown, and I have a few favorites myself. The photo below was in the East Village, but up and down Grand Ave and side alleys are hidden gems, waiting for your perfect pose!
4. Gray’s Lake Park
You’ll find many spots of wildflowers and leafy trees along the banks of Gray’s Lake. This park hosts a dock and beach, so if your dream is to stand up paddle board during senior photos, this would be a great space for it! There are multiple parking lots, wonderful in summer when the park is at its busiest with visitors.
5. Des Moines Riverwalk
The river is always a fun idea! There are multiple bridges in Des Moines, or you can wander along the banks and enjoy the view of the sun setting behind historical buildings to capture photos like Sophia below, on the steps away from the water.
Why Location Matters for Your Des Moines Senior Photos
Choosing the right location helps tell your story. Your senior session should reflect your personality, style, and confidence.
As a Des Moines senior photographer known for colorful, bold, high-contrast images, I help seniors choose locations that fit their vision while creating variety throughout the session.
Frequently Asked Questions About Senior Pictures in Des Moines
When is the best time to take senior pictures in Des Moines?
The best time for senior photos in Des Moines is late spring through early fall (May–October). Spring offers colorful blooms, Summer provides deep greens and colorful gardens, while fall sets us up with colorful leaves & more muted backdrops. Winter is cold, but beautiful and a more non-traditional choice!
How many locations should I choose for my senior session?
Most senior photography sessions in Des Moines include 1–3 locations. Choosing close-by locations for your session allows for more variety, without losing shooting time.
Do I need permission for senior photos at these locations?
Some locations, like the Botanical Gardens and Hoyt Sherman Place, require a photography fee. The Iowa State Capitol Law Library does not charge a fee, but is closed during the evenings. Always check for updated guidelines before your session.
What should I wear for my senior photos?
Pick and wear outfits that you find comfortable and fun! I always suggest you choose clothing that reflects your personality. Vibrant, bold, fashion forward outfits work well downtown, while more muted, classic neutrals provide a softer touch in gardens and parks.
