Family Portraits
Extended family sessions can happen any season of the year (and I’ve done them all!) but fall tends to be one of the most popular. If you can drag certain people away from the TV screen during football season, and manage to find a color palette for the crew, it’s worth it.
After 10 years of photographing families, I’m leaning back into FUN and kid-led sessions. Less yelling and telling them to “stand still + smile” and way more snuggles, chasing each other in the park, and including their favorite activities. Let’s have fun while they’re little! Make homemade pizza and picnic in the backyard, or ride bikes to the sculpture park to fly kites. Nothing is too ordinary to capture!
Capturing your family in the stage of life you currently experience opens us to so many fun activities and options. I want to dive deeper into lifestyle, documentary photography & this session really shows off what I mean by that! The J family welcomed girl #4 this spring, and we spent an afternoon updating family photos of the 5 of them in a cute family/maternity beach session!
Little Charlotte is a cutie pie, and mom & dad knew that mornings are more ideal for her, so we scheduled a session then. It was cool and lovely; they played some of her favorite games and read a beloved book together, and captured this season of life as a family of 3 in Des Moines!
Getting to capture past couples again means so much, especially when I get to meet the newest family members. Even better, is coming away with a new 3 year old best friend. :) I love this family and this Cedar Falls family photo location.

Capturing multi-generational families brings me a lot of joy- especially when they’re people I dearly love!! After becoming close friends with Kinsey, her family has welcomed me into their hearts. They’ve even let me celebrate holidays with them! I’m so glad we got to capture this season of their growing crew.

I can’t believe it’s been 4 years since Alex & Andy said vows at the Little Brown Church, and held a backyard reception just blocks away from where they live now with two of the cutest little girls in Cedar Falls:)
June is the prettiest month, and I got to take some photos of the prettiest mama-to-be!! Jasleen brought princess energy to her shoot, just glowing and looking SO stunning. I’m excited to meet baby boy this summer!!

Summer evenings- when the sun sets late, the birds and cicadas provide a music (no batteries needed!) and …we can just pretend that bugs don’t exist for this moment in time. ;) Family photos in summertime are my favorite- colorful flowers and grass, blue skies, and the promise of ice cream on the way home!
Capturing family photos always means a lot- maybe it’s because my own family rarely makes time to do this! Life moves too fast to not have some printed memories, and I’m so glad I was able to fit this crew into my fall schedule. :)
Lindha called me last year, asking if I had any openings for extended family sessions while her kids & grandkids were in town! Thankfully, we were able to align our schedules and it was so worth our praying- the weather was gorgeous, and the kids did great for our time hanging out & snapping some photos. These are always some of the most special sessions to me, knowing that these printed photos will be on the wall for years and years!
Summer as a child is the most magical of times! Long days at the community pool, catching fireflies and eating s’mores… I wish I could go back to the late 90’s for one more summertime. ;) This is a modern family living in a current reality, but I think these kids are still getting to experience summer in all its glory!
This sweet family transplanted to Iowa, and it was so fun to connect with them to update their family photos. Kids grow up so fast… so make sure you remember to capture the moments while they’re happening!
Newborn photos are always a treat for me- I just wish I could stay longer to snuggle them, every time. ;) I’m so excited that I’ll have a few more newborn sessions this winter to keep me fresh!! Enjoy sweet Nellie when she was just a few weeks old.
